Presentation of UCC Sports Scholarships 2009/2010

UCC Sports Stars were honoured on Monday, February 8th 2010 when almost 100 Sports Scholarships were presented to students at the university. This year, 18 sports are being recognised including Modern Pentathlon for the first time with Men’s Hockey making a welcome return.

Mr Con O’Brien, Vice-President for the Student Experience who presented the scholarships said: “Once again the number of students in UCC excelling in sports applying for a Sports Scholarship is extremely high.  Almost 100 students received Sports Scholarships this year.”

Sports being honoured included Rowing, Handball, Ladies Gaelic Football, Sailing, Badminton, Rugby, Soccer, Hurling, Golf, Ladies & Men’s Hockey, Gaelic Football, Camogie, Basketball, Trampoline, Athletics, Modern Pentathlon and Volleyball.

The GAA winners included All Ireland U21 Gaelic Football winners Mark Collins and Paul Honohan, All-Ireland Senior Camogie and All Star winner for Cork – Orla Cotter, and also Ciara O’Sullivan who is a Cork Ladies Gaelic Football All-Ireland medal winner. Michael Shields a member of the Cork Senior Gaelic Football Team and GAA All Star is also a re-awardee.

The success of the UCC Senior Rugby team in the All Ireland League last season sees 12 rugby scholarships awarded with David O’Callaghan, Ivan Dineen and Seán Scanlon being amongst the awardees. International basketball and hockey players were recognised in addition to International rowers, trampolinists and sailors.

Two UCC sporting heroes were remembered again this year. The Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship, now in its third year, is in honour of the memory of Jason Foley who died on the basketball court of sudden cardiac death syndrome while playing for his local club Glenmary BC Midleton. 

Three scholarships were awarded in memory of Jonathan Herlihy who drowned tragically while attempting to save two others from drowning.

Fifteen Munster Council GAA Scholarships, valued at €1000, were also presented. Amongst the recipients was Ken O’Halloran, UCC Senior Goalkeeper.

Cadbury’s Ireland are also continuing their sponsorship of aspiring U21 Gaelic Footballers in addition to their sponsorship of the All Ireland U21 Series.  Paul Honohan and Mark Collins – All Ireland U21 winners with Cork in 2009 were worthy recipients of these awards this year.

EMC are also on board with sponsorship this year with Fionnuala Carr, Camogie being the recipient of the EMC Award. UCC is grateful to EMC for sponsoring this scholarship.

The Bank of Ireland, proud sponsors of the UCC Sports Clubs also sponsored three scholarships this year.  The inaugural recipients of the Bank of Ireland Fresher Sports Scholarships are: Ian O’Rourke – Golf – Munster “Junior Golfer of the year”, Claire Rockall, Basketball – Irish Senior International, U20 Cup winner recently with Team Montenotte, Glanmire, and Josh O’Shea, Soccer, a member of the Emerging Talent Programme and a member of the UCC Collingwood Cup team.

Family, friends, coaches, and college personnel joined the recipients at the function in the Aula Maxima, UCC. The event was organised by UCC’s Office of Sport and Recreation.
