UCC Student Wins EirGrid Sustainable Energy Award
09.02.2010

A renewable energy student has won an award for her Master’s thesis on new green sources of energy. EirGrid, in partnership with UCC, awards the prize each year to the ‘best-taught’ student in UCC’s Sustainable Energy Master’s programme.

The EirGrid award encourages students to get involved in this vital area and Ms Rea is the fourth recipient.

A Cork native from Waterfall, Ms Rea’s thesis looks at 'Dynamic Modelling Techniques for Wave and Wind Energy Systems'. Her topic is both timely and relevant given trends in Ireland and globally for increasing renewable energy targets. In Ireland 40 per cent of all electricity used must come from renewable energy sources by 2020.

Judy completed her minor thesis under the supervision of Dr Michael Egan in UCC's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

UCC's School of Engineering's taught Masters (MEngSc) Programme in Sustainable Energy is now in its fifth year and is attracting considerable interest, both from applicants wishing to participate and from employers looking for suitably trained staff. In the current academic year there were 290 applicants for 25 places. A core element of the programme is incorporating industry involvement from companies like EirGrid.
