UCCs Doctoral Showcase

Thu, 14 Jun 2012

The final of UCCs Doctoral Showcase took place on 7th June in Devere Hall.  This annual event is run by the Graduate Studies Office and allows doctoral researchers from all colleges to present their research in non-specialist terms.  The initiative is intended to demonstrate the range of research being carried out in UCC to both the university community and the general public.

There are different categories, including the Three Minute Thesis (PhD second-years up) and Grand Plan (first-year PhD students only) both of which involve the student explaining their research in three minutes using only one slide, and the Creative Mind category, in which a student presents their work using any creative method (eg: demonstration, dance, song, video) in no more than five minutes.  The event is intended to attract both public and media attention.

Sarah Kandrot (The Grand Plan), Romina King (The Creative Mind), Gearóid McCarthy (The Three Minute Thesis), and Richard Scriven (The Grand Plan) all competed in the finals and performed very impressively.  Richard came joint second across the entire campus in his category.   On behalf of the entire UCC geography team, a mighty congratulations to all four finalists.
