'Taste Cork' newsletter discusses CAO options for Food Science and Nutritional Sciences programmes

UCC School of Food and Nutritional Sciences

Many of your readers will know leaving cert students who may be interested in studying food and nutrition and we’d like to remind them about the CAO change of mind delaine, 1st July.

At UCC’s School of Food and Nutritional Sciences, we are acutely aware of the challenges that this year’s leaving certificate students are facing, as the standard exam process has been severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We are currently living through uncertain times but one constant is the necessity of food production and ensuring a safe, reliable and healthy food supply. For this reason, the food industry has always been hugely important in society. It will play a pivotal role in Ireland’s economic recovery once the country begins to return to normality, providing significant career opportunities to those who opt to study food and nutritional sciences.

Change of Mind – 1st July

Many of you will know leaving certificate students, some of whom are considering changing their initial CAO choices.

Until 1st July, CAO applicants will be able to register an online change of course choices, free of charge, at http://www.cao.ie/index.php?page=aboutCOM

UCC’s BSc Food Science and Nutritional Sciences programmes prepare students for all aspects of the Food Industry and Human Nutrition. Our graduates work in a wide range of areas including food production, quality assurance, new product development, food safety, nutrition, dietetics, and in the biomedical and biopharmaceutical industries. Many are self-employed in various niche sectors. UCC graduates have always had wonderful career paths and our alumni are highly valued in the Food Industry, both in Ireland and abroad.

Our website www.ucc.ie/en/fns/ is a valuable source of information for leaving certificate students currently reviewing course choices, and the graduate profiles shown there will inform students of the diversity of potential employment opportunities.

At foodandnutrition@ucc.ie, we are happy to answer any queries leaving certificate students may have regarding our courses in Food Science (CK505) or Nutritional Sciences (CK504), prior to the CAO Change of Mind deadline on 1st July.
