Rainbow Stairs Officially Opened in Boole
UCC Library celebrated the official launch of the recently painted Rainbow Stairs in its main stairwell.
The rainbow flag was originally created by Gilbert Baker in 1978. Commissioned by Harvey Milk, one of the first gay elected officials in the U.S., it has since become a universal symbol for equality, diversity, inclusion, and visibility. Since its inception, the rainbow flag has symbolised the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender.
At UCC it celebrates and recognises the diversity of the UCC community and expresses UCC's firm commitment to the creation of a campus that is inclusive and fosters a sense of belonging. The flag has gone through several iterations over the years and the colours that were used for the staircase in UCC Library reflect, the most recent fully inclusive, design of the flag, the Progress Pride Flag designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018 and further redesigned by Valentino Vecchieti in 2021.
