Thursday 3rd December – 5-6pm – MS Teams.
Dr Rachel Woodlock – Assistant Lecturer – UCC Study of Religions Department
Seminar Topic: Fear of Muslims? Understanding Islamophobia
Abstract: This seminar explores how Islamophobia has become a controversial term and topic used to describe hostility towards Islam as a religion or its manifestation as a political ideology, and the resulting fear, rejection, and stigmatising of Muslims. How has this gone beyond philosophical disagreement and critique of Islamic tenets, and which has resulted in cases of discrimination and ultimately even violence against Muslims?
Dr Woodlock co-edited Fear of Muslims? International Perspectives on Islamophobia with Professor Douglas Pratt (Springer, 2016) and in this seminar she will discuss the debate over the term ‘Islamophobia’, its overlap and differences with racism, and the various conduits and products of Islamophobia. Formerly at Monash University (Australia) where she completed her doctoral research looking at the social inclusion of religious Muslims in Australia, Dr Woodlock is now an Assistant Lecturer in the Study of Religions at University College Cork.
All welcome. Organised by Study of Religions
