Female students of geology in Victorian Dublin

The Cork Geological Association

in collaboration with Geology, School of BEES,

will host a Zoom lecture given by

Dr. Susan Hegarty, Dublin City University, and series presenter on RTE’s ‘Building Ireland’

On Tuesday 26th January at 8pm

The lecture is entitled   Female students of geology in Victorian Dublin

This lecture will give a unique insight into Irish geological and social history. In Ireland, the science of geology began to thrive during the middle of the nineteenth century, with the expansion of geological mapping by the Geological Survey of Great Britain and Ireland, and the foundation of important Geological Societies across the islands of Britain and Ireland. Susan has explored the provision of geological lectures by officers of the Geological Survey of Ireland through the Museum of Irish Industry in Dublin, including the role of Prof. Robert Kane, the first President of Queen’s College Cork. Susan will follow the women who took these courses during the 1850s and 60s and completed geological examinations for London’s Science and Art Department in Dublin. She will give us a glimpse into the scientific, and specifically geological interests and activities of these pioneering women at a time when it was not possible for them to become members of the Geological Societies in the cities in which they lived. This original research was recently published online by the Geological Society, London, and will be out in hardback in March 2021.
