Beyond Capitalism: Mapping an Eco-Social Future
A Lecture by Prof. Peadar Kirby

As a recent report by seventeen top scientists alerts us to the 'ghastly future of mass extinction' and climate disruption that faces us, it is clear that the public discourse is beginning to move beyond a fixation with techno-fixes and focus on te entral challenges of mapping a radically alternative social future. In this talk, Prof. Peadar Kirby will argue that our societies are shaped by the interrelationship of state, market and society which constitutes our social model, and that we urgently need to address what kind of social model can get us to a low-carbon future. He maps out key elements.
Peadar Kirby BA (UCD), BD (Maynooth), H.Dip (UCD),PhD (LSE) is Emeritus Professor of International Politics and Public Policy, and director of the Institute for the Study of Knowledge in Society, at the University of Limerick. His latest publications are Explaining Ireland's Development: Economic Growth with Weakening Welfare, Social Policy and Development Paper No. 37, United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD, 2008), Power, Dissent and Democracy: Civil Society and the State in Ireland, co-edited with Deiric Ó Broin(A&A Farmar, 2009) and Transforming Ireland: Challenges, Critiques, Resources, co-edited with Debbie Ging and Michael Cronin (Manchester University Press, 2009), Towards a Second Republic: Irish Politics after the Celtic Tiger, co-edited with Mary P.
