Conversations on Ireland and Latin America

Conversations on Ireland and Latin America

UCC’s Department of Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies welcomes you to join us for a series of conversations on the growing connections between Ireland and Latin America in the areas of academia, art and activism. Throughout February, March and April, we will host a monthly virtual session, which will bring together academics, activists and artists with a connection to or a research interest in Latin America for a round table discussion, followed by participation from the audience. A key aim of these sessions is to connect those of us on the island of Ireland with an interest in social and cultural issues that impact Latin America, which are also relevant in our own communities.

Speakers include:

Sarah Bowskill is a Senior Lecturer in Latin American Studies at Queen's University Belfast. Her research focuses on the social and political functions of cultural production. She is particularly interested in how women and other marginalised groups negotiate the cultural field. She is author of a monograph about the formation of the twentieth-century Mexican literary canon and is co-editor of a volume about the use of multimedia by contemporary Spanish American women authors and artists. She is currently working on two projects one about the politics of literary prizes in Spanish America and a second about fictional representations of femicides and disappearances in 21st century Mexican literature.

David Conlon works at the Department of Spanish and Latin American Studies in Maynooth University. He completed his PhD at NUIG. His research focuses on Contemporary Latin American Literature and Culture, with focus on Crime Narratives and ecocritical approaches to literary and filmic texts.

She worked in educational and cultural international cooperation for Universidad Veracruzana (UV) and the Veracruz state Ministry of Education in Mexico for over 15 years. Her research interests include social responsibility, community engagement, migration, sustainable development and internationalisation in higher education and how they can play a role in promoting global citizenship and Agenda 2030 on a local, regional and global level.
