The Role of Culture in Transforming Cities and Building Community Solidarity

Throughout 2021, Alumni and Development will host a series of conversations with an international focus.  Each month, an expert from the global alumni community will discuss a topic of interest with a specialist from UCC.  Exploring both the challenges and opportunities facing us in this new world, the Global Speaker Series will look at what we have learned over the past year and will investigate what the future holds. 

The Role of Culture in Transforming Cities and Building Community Solidarity

On Thursday, March 25th at 5pm, we are delighted to welcome UCC alum, Mary McCarthy (Director of the Crawford Art Gallery and Member of the Council of National Cultural Institutions) and Dr Declan Jordan (Senior Lecturer in Economics and Founding Co-Director of the Spatial and Regional Economics Research Centre at UCC).

• What is the role of art and art institutions in these turbulent times? 
• Are cities an enabling environment for the arts?  
• How can cities of the future support the long-term sustainability of the cultural sector? 
• In the current climate, with cities undergoing huge change and navigating a period of uncertainty, is there an opportunity to do things differently? 

The third talk in UCC’s Global Speaker Series will explore these questions and more.
