Safe and Sound Update

It has been a busy few months for the Safe and Sound Project. The Safe and Sound Project is a campaign in UCC that is working with students, staff, and external collaborators on the subject of sexual violence and harassment.
In early February we played host to UCC's Safe and Sound first Healing Week. This week promoted messaging around healing from sexual violence, as well as highlighting supports. Additionally, in collaboration with the UCC Japanese society, Safe and Sound hosted a kitsungi event. This practice is the Japanese art of healing by embracing imperfection, by symbolically mending broken plates with gold glue. The event was a drop in plate mending session, and about 30 attendees came along, and their plates will be photographed and shared online shortly.
To wrap up Healing Week, we also collaborated with Green Campus, the UCC Sustainability Officer, and Dr Dara Fitzpatrick from the School of Chemistry to host a nature walk on campus, with 18 species of birds spotted. Following Healing week, to mark Valentines Day Safe and Sound also hosted a stall outside the Maker Space. In February, Safe and Sound also hosted two Rapid HIV testing stalls in collaboration with the Sexual Health Centre, UCC Feminist Society, UCC Brod Society, Staff LGBT Network, UCC Student Union. Visitors could get a private HIV test that is just a quick finger prick test and results are given in one minute. From February onwards, these stalls will be monthly, and visitors can also collect free SH:24 home STI testing kits. Numbers visiting the stall have tripled and the service is open to staff and students- and free!
In March, Safe and Sound will run campaigns around stalking, image based sexual abuse, gaslighting, condom usage, sexual harassment, and Seachtain na Gaeilge. A focus group for international students will be held on the 6th March at 4.30 where international students are invited to share their thoughts on creating content that is relevant to them.
