UCC's Department of Digital Humanities hosts OpenStreetMap Ireland AGM

The Department of Digital Humanities at University College Cork was honoured to host the Annual General Meeting of OpenStreetMap Ireland on 20 September 2025.
This event was a significant occasion for the Irish mapping community, attracting a broad audience that included OpenStreetMap Ireland board members, mapping enthusiasts, and experts. The gathering provided an engaging environment for sharing experiences and discussing the future of open-source mapping in Ireland. OpenStreetMap is a global organisation dedicated to creating a free and editable map of the world, relying on contributions from local chapters, such as OpenStreetMap Ireland, to enhance mapping efforts and promote collaboration.
The AGM served as a unique platform to encourage the continuation of an all-Ireland approach, emphasising collaboration on initiatives aimed at preserving local cultural heritage while simultaneously contributing to global mapping efforts through activities such as mapathons, community outreach, policy engagement, and government collaboration.
The event took place in UCC's state-of-the-art Digital Arts and Humanities Active Learning Space, featuring presentations from OpenStreetMap Ireland board members. These presentations highlighted recent accomplishments, ongoing projects, and ambitious future goals. Attendees left inspired by discussions about leveraging technology and fostering community involvement to enhance Ireland's presence on the global mapping stage.
Dr Shawn Day, Head of the Department of Digital Humanities at UCC, expressed his delight at hosting the OpenStreetMap Ireland AGM 2025, stating:
"It's an honour to bring together such a passionate and talented group of individuals committed to the growth and development of open-source mapping in Ireland. Events like this not only showcase the incredible potential of collaborative mapping initiatives but also emphasise the importance of preserving our local heritage and landscapes."
The successful AGM marked a significant milestone for OpenStreetMap Ireland and UCC's Department of Digital Humanities, paving the way for continued growth, innovation, and collaboration in the field of digital mapping.
