  • Marcella Smyth reflects on how UCC’s MA in Strategic Studies strengthened her career in global diplomacy.

Marcella Smyth has built an impressive diplomatic career, and today she serves as Ireland's Consul General to the South Western United States. Her path to this senior position in international relations has taken her from EU headquarters in Brussels to Canada, and now to the U.S.A. Southwest, with many high-level roles in between —including Deputy Director for International Security Policy at Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Marcella is a graduate of the MA in Strategic Studies (Online) at University College Cork. In this Alumni Spotlight, she reflects on her experience of the programme, and shares her perspective on balancing postgraduate study with the demands of a senior diplomatic role and family life.

What was your experience like studying the MA in Strategic Studies?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at UCC. The course was a significant benefit to me professionally-I was able to draw on so much of what I learned for my work. I also really enjoyed being back in academia, challenging myself within that environment again.

What made you choose this postgraduate programme?

I chose this course as the subject aligned with my interests, my career and also because of the excellent reputation of the lecturers-I had a familiarity with and was an admirer of Dr. Mervyn O’Driscoll’s work prior to applying and was thrilled to have the opportunity to attend his course.  I also deeply appreciated the flexibility that the course allowed-working full time in a demanding role as well as being a parent meant I needed a course that allowed for study at irregular hour!

What was your experience like studying online with UCC?

There is always a concern that studying online can leave you feeling isolated or without support. The forums for discussions, the inclusion of group assignments as well as the opportunity to undertake a week of in-person learning ensured that there was a constant connection, sense of camaraderie and supportive environment. I remain very grateful to Dr. O’Driscoll, Professor Ryan and Dr. Fitzgerald for their unfailing encouragement.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about studying online while also working or managing other commitments?

It is important to choose a course that really interests you and that you know will sustain your attention. Plan ahead-I took on additional course credits in the first year as I knew that the second year would be very busy for me professionally and personally.  Try to set aside regular times each week for study and assignments so as not to be overwhelmed! And of course, know that other students and lecturers are there for support.
