Innovation in creative practice celebrated at inaugural Danijela Kulezic-Wilson symposium

16 Oct 2025
  • The symposium will explore connections between music, film, theatre and health sciences.
  • The event will honour the legacy of Dr. Danijela Kulezic-Wilson, a pioneer in interdisciplinary sound and film research
  • It will showcase new voices in creative and scholarly practice.

Innovative creative practice and arts/science interdisciplinary research will be the focus of a symposium at University College Cork (UCC). The inaugural Danijela Kulezic-Wilson Memorial Postgraduate Symposium will showcase and celebrate Ireland’s scholarly and artistic research communities working at the intersections of music, film, theatre, and performance across the humanities and health sciences.

The symposium celebrates the legacy of Dr Danijela Kulezic-Wilson, whose influential research on film music and sound continues to shape interdisciplinary scholarship in the arts. A member of UCC’s School of Film, Music and Theatre until her passing in 2021, Dr Kulezic-Wilson’s research is recognised internationally for its originality and for its deeply interdisciplinary approach, bridging music, film, and sound studies.

Taking place on Friday, 17 October, the symposium will feature presentations from postgraduate researchers from across Ireland sharing new research and creative practice.

The event reflects the collaborative and exploratory ethos that defined Dr Kulezic-Wilson’s work. The programme brings together a range of formats, from talks and performances to film screenings and demonstrations.

Highlights include presentations by three Danijela Kulezic-Wilson Memorial PhD Scholars at UCC -  Maxine Acton-Carey (UCC Theatre and Performative Practices) Rishin Singh (UCC Music) and Dee Molloy (UCC Theatre and Performative Practices

John Godfrey, Head of the School of Film, Music and Theatre at UCC, said: “It’s deeply meaningful for us to honour Danijela’s legacy in this way; she was a much-loved colleague and a remarkable researcher and educator whose work continues to inspire students and researchers across disciplines.”

“This symposium reflects the values Danijela championed, most especially the rich creativity to be found in dialogues between diverse fields. Her inspiring reimagining of the role of sound design in film, for example, challenges us to rethink how we understand film sound and music at the most fundamental level. The symposium celebrates research that draws together knowledge from various disciplines, sometimes quite dissimilar, and uncovers surprising, creative and thought-provoking new ideas. This is a symposium that we hope will have something for everyone and it’s open to anyone who is interested, whether they are researchers, students, artists, creative practitioners or members of the public.”

The Danijela Kulezic-Wilson scholarship and symposium is supported by Douglas Murray and the WHH Foundation.  All philanthropy is facilitated by the Cork University Foundation.

All are welcome to attend the full symposium or join sessions across the day.

The morning sessions will take place in UCC Department of Music’s Ó Riada Hall (Sunday’s Well Road) and the afternoon sessions will be in the Film and Screen Media Department on UCC’s main campus. Register here
