The social media narrative of far-right parties, gender dynamics in climate activism and the role of Irish cinema in colonial histories are among the topics which will be explored at a conference at University College Cork.

Doctoral Researchers at UCC College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences will showcase their work at the Postgraduate Research Conference 2024 which starts today.

The two-day conference invites doctoral researchers to present their most recent research across key areas including Applied Social Studies, History, Theatre and Education, and it highlights the research and innovation taking place within the College.

Presentations will explore a range of themes, including the experiences of marginalised people, the consequences of war, the mental health and well-being of individuals, social integration, colonialism, culture and political activism.

Ahead of the conference, Dr Barry Monahan, Vice Head of College (Graduate Studies), said: “Our Research Conference is an important opportunity to celebrate and promote the exciting and diverse research being led by postgraduate researchers in the College. It’s a wonderful forum in which our researchers come together to communicate their expertise and innovation, and well as to connect and collaborate creatively and intellectually with peers and colleagues across the university.”

Every year, delegates from the conference go on to publish their work in world class peer-reviewed journals, and edited collections, and many participate editorially and publish in the College journal for Arts and Humanities Aigne, and the specialist Film and Screen Media online journal Alphaville.

Professor John Cryan, Vice President for Research and Innovation at UCC, said: “The conference at the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the exceptional depth of research and innovation in the college. The conference will provide doctoral researchers with the opportunity and experience to present their multi-disciplinary research that aligns to several of our UCC Futures thematic areas – Future Humanities, Collective Social Futures, Children, and Sustainability.”
