CACSSS at 68th Annual Cork International Film Festival

UCC is the official Academic Partner of the 68th Cork International Film Festival, and the university has collaborated across many stands of this year’s festival.
In the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences, staff, students, and alumni of the Department of Film and Screen Media have engaged with the festival, realising opportunities for internships and work and partaking in panels and screening films inside and outside of competition.
Things Can Only Get Better?
This education workshop for secondary students from transition year upwards focussed on opportunities for young people across the screen sector. Lord David Puttnam spoke about a pilot programme led by his education company, Atticus Education, and supported by Screen Ireland, that ran for transition year students earlier this year. School representatives and screen sector educators spoke in a panel discussion chaired by Dr Ciara Chambers, Head of the Department of Film and Screen Media.

UCC Lord Puttnam Scholars Screening – A Close Shave
The Puttnam Scholarship Programme offers UCC students from any discipline the opportunity to work with, and learn from, digital education pioneer Lord David Puttnam, Oscar-winning producer of films including Chariots of Fire, The Mission, The Killing Fields, and Midnight Express. The scholars must be final-year undergraduate or postgraduate students, and this year, the Puttnam Scholars were students in the fields of Nursing, Law, English and Film and Screen Media.
Last week, the Puttnam Scholars showcased their film ‘Close Shave’ at St. Peter’s, North Main St as part of CIFF. A panel discussion with the scholars, Lord Puttnam and Dr Ciara Chambers followed the screening.
Two scholars, Sarah Jessica Dunne and Bob Jackson, shared their experiences working on Close Shave.
