It's not just Fantasy!
The UCC Staff Fantasy Football Club was established in August 2001 and is now celebrating its 19th season. Over the years, the club has gone from strength to strength.
In 2001, the initial membership was 16. Now, the club boasts a membership of 110. The UCCFFC is an excellent and vibrant club, which draws members from all across UCC. We also maintain links with some former UCC staff who have retired or work elsewhere, but who continue to play fantasy football with us.
Fantasy football has also proven a great way for new staff members to integrate into the university and become part of a wider group. Fantasy football is based on the concept that managers select players from the English Premier League and construct a squad/team; managers then score points based on the actual performance of the players.
Our club produces a weekly six-page newsletter which, for the 2019/2020 season, is called The VAR Post. We are currently at Issue 627. The ethos of the club is to play fantasy football in a spirit of competitive fun. The game itself can often be frustrating but much of the enjoyment comes from the banter with colleagues across campus.
Our Manager of the Season for 2018/2019 is Reza Arkani (Tyndall Institute) and our most recent monthly champion is Pat Quinn (Buildings and Estates).Aodh Quinlivan (Department of Government and Politics) is the Chairman of the club, Cormac McSweeney (Finance Office) is Treasurer and Damian Butler (Mature Student Office) is the our representative on the Staff Sports and Social Club Committee.
The SSSC has been very supportive of our club over the years and we are immensely grateful for this. We now have an impressive suite of trophies and our Manager of the Season in 2019/2020 will receive a full-size replica Champions League trophy! The trophy is named after Brendan Richardson (Marketing and Management) who passed away on 30 June 2018 – he is sadly missed but fondly remembered by all in the UCC Staff Fantasy Football Club.
