The UCC Players present Willy Russell’s Educating Rita

UCC Players Advert

15th – 19th May, 7.30pm, Aula Maxima, University College Cork

Tickets €15 + booking fee from Limited number of hard-copy tickets available from Friday 29th April at UCC Visitors' Centre in the North Wing on the Quad. Tickets will not be on sale at the door on the performance nights.

Educating Rita won the Olivier Award when it was produced in London’s West End by the RSC and was adapted into the multi award-winning film which starred Julie Walters and Michael Caine. Written by one of Britain’s greatest playwrights, Willy Russell, this production stars Jim O’ Mahony as Frank and Karen Ray as Rita, and harnesses the real-life academic setting of University College Cork. The story has a proud link to Irish universities, given that the film adaptation was shot at Trinity College Dublin. This May is UCC's turn to share in this heart-warming comedy.

Directed and produced by Brenda Lynch, Jim O’ Mahony and Karen Ray. Licensed by Samuel French. Photography by Darragh Kane.

Upcoming Events 2021/2022

Book Club

We started off 2021 with the evocative Cork-based memoir A Ghost in the Throat by Doireann Ni Ghríofa. In February we read the Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett and in March we grappled with the - very long - A Promised Land by Barack Obama. In May we travelled back in time to the famine era with The Hungry Road by Marita Conlon-McKenna (this one split opinion!) and in June enjoyed the quirky The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery.

July and August saw in two books by Cork authors: Holding Her Breath by Eimear Ryan and The Art of Falling by Danielle McLaughlin. Both authors came to speak to us for Q and A sessions which was a wonderful chance to meet them and learn more about the books 'behind the scenes'.

For October we will be the turn of The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. For November, we're delighted to be linking up with the UCC Staff LGBT+ Network to read Diving for Pearls by Jamie O'Connell. We'll be welcoming the author for a Q and A session which we're really looking forward to. December will see us read a book with links to the theme of Global Citizenship and Development as suggested by member Martha Phelan, who is involved with the UCC Praxis project.
