School of Engineering students awarded the John Francis Burke Award in Biomedical Systems Design

15 Apr 2025

This year's winners of the John Francis Burke award in Biomedical Systems Design (EE4012) is the RadSil team consisting of Ellen Maye, Emin Tomson, Jingle Huang, Harish Anto Paul Antony Robinson and Mahendra Sai Mutalya. Their technology solution proposed an alternative light-weight protection for clinicians exposed to ionising radiation during clinical procedures.

The presentations of the teams behind FluoroTOF and Resterix provided imaginative solutions to real clinical problems in the areas of medical imaging and medical device sterilisation. All presentations were of a high quality and the School would like to commend all the teams for putting this together in during such a busy schedule at this time of year.

Professor Padraig Cantillon-Murphy added 'Finally, a very sincere thank you to our former colleague, Dr. Fiona Edwards Murphy (now faculty at the Business School) for her time and input in helping with today's judging. Also sincere thanks to Dr. Mark O'Sullivan from Neurobell, Mr. Mark Kelleher from Device Quality Limited and Dr. Salvatore Tedesco from Tyndall whose guest lectures added so much to this year's module. This is the thirteenth year that we have run the Biomedical Systems module (albeit in a slightly curtailed format since covid deprived us of the medical students' participation). It continues to remain popular with students across the school of engineering (today's cohort consisted of students from five different programmes) and is a highly enjoyable part of my own teaching experience at UCC'.
