Mechanical Engineering PhD student awarded prestigious Heidenhain Scholarship

Mechanical Engineering PhD student, Yiran Wang, under the supervision of Prof. Guangbo Hao and Dr. Xiuyun He, has been awarded a prestigious Heidenhain Scholarship/award by The European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (euspen) for attending the euspen’s 25th International Conference and Exhibition to be held in Zaragoza, Spain. The scholarship will cover her conference fee and a networking dinner and single contribution of €300 towards her accommodation and subsistence costs. There are 10 students in total across the world per year to be selected for this award. Prof. Hao’s PhD student, Tinghao Liu, also won this award last year.

Scholarships are awarded to researchers in recognition of strong academic accomplishment and significant potential in the field of metrology, precision manufacturing, sensors, machine tools, automation and measuring instruments performance.

 

There will be a short ceremony taking place on Wednesday 11th June 2025 currently scheduled at 16:30 - 16:40 where she will be recognised and identified as a winner of the Heidenhain scholarships for 2025.

Yiran is currently a 2rd-year PhD student, working on her thesis on the design of the compliant mechanisms for medical devices. During the first year of her PhD study, she worked as a research assistant at the School of Pharmacy, UCC, developing a force-limiting applicator for microneedle patches. This research outcome has been officially filed for an EU patent.
