Welcome and Vision

Welcome to the School of Engineering & Architecture at University College Cork

As Head of School, I am delighted to welcome you to a community where creativity, technical excellence, and societal impact converge. Our School is purpose driven to educate future-ready engineers and architects who will tackle the defining challenges of our time, from climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable energy to advanced photonics, pharmaceuticals, electronics and food security.

My own journey at UCC began as an undergraduate, graduating with first-class honours in Electrical Engineering in 1992, followed by a PhD in semiconductor lasers at the National Microelectronics Research Centre (now Tyndall National Institute) and Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven. After working as a Research Scientist on silicon photonics, I joined UCC as an academic in 1998. I have since served as Dean of Engineering (2012–2018) and most recently as Vice-Dean for Undergraduate Affairs (2021-2025), before taking up my current role as Head of School.

My research sits at the intersection of optoelectronics and real-world applications, including single photon detection, quantum random number generation, UV-LEDs for sustainable cropping, and photovoltaic systems. I am a Senior Member of IEEE, a Chartered Physicist with the Institute of Physics, and a member of the Accreditation Board of Engineers Ireland.

Whether you are a prospective student, a research partner, or an industry collaborator, you will find a welcoming, ambitious, and supportive environment here. Explore our programmes, meet our people, and join us in engineering a better future.
