From April 22-24, 2025, over 70 delegates from 15 countries attended the Early Career Researchers’ (ECR) and Roundtable Meeting of the Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities (PIMD) Special Interest Research Group (SIRG) at UCC, both online and in-person. The SIRG is part of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. The theme was Profound Partnerships: Working in partnership to advance research and support of persons with PIMD. The SIRG PIMD is a diverse group dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with PIMD.
The ECR meeting provided a platform for early career researchers to present their work and learn from each other. Special guests MCC PAWS joined the morning session, and Dr. Emmy Racine delivered a workshop on Public and Patient Involvement (PPI).
The Roundtable meeting featured welcome addresses, a keynote from Family Carer Advocates, and various presentations. A panel discussion on “Research Partnerships for Advancing Care and Support” included parents, researchers, and carers. The event also offered networking opportunities and a walking tour of University College Cork.
We thank the Health Research Board Ireland Conference and Event Sponsorship Scheme 2024 and the SIRG PIMD for their support.
Convenors: Dr. Anne-Marie Martin (Lead), Dr. Edina Hanley, Ms. Caroline Egan, Ms. Sanne Nieuwenhuis, and Ms. Laura Leahy.
