Advanced Nursing Practice Virtual Global Classroom - UCC and Drexel University

1 Apr 2020

The first virtual ‘Global Classroom’ between students on the Masters programmes

Global health concerns go beyond national borders and discourse on many health issues benefit from international collaboration and learning. The first virtual ‘Global Classroom’ between students on the Masters programmes in Advanced Nursing Practice at the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Cork and the School of Nursing and Health professions at Drexel University Philadelphia in the USA will take place over 2 weeks commencing 12th April. A virtual global classroom was developed to equip students with a framework to exchange knowledge and develop transcultural competence on issues common to most countries. This initial virtual global classroom will address two global healthcare issues for advanced practice nurses: palliative care and addiction. Experts in both fields from the USA and Ireland will present on these subjects in the virtual learning environment and online discussion will be facilitated among the students and the experts for the following week. This project, a collaboration between Dr Patrick Cotter (UCC) and Ms Cheryl Mele and Dr Theresa Campo (Drexel University), brings together clinical and academic experts in the areas of addiction and palliative care from both sides of the Atlantic. These include, from UCC Dr Oliver Feeney (ethical issues in palliative care), Mr Peter Kelly (addiction) and Ms Sinead Heffernan (trauma informed care) and from Drexel Dr Al Rundio (addiction), Ms Mary Ellen Wright (perinatal addiction), Ms Xenia Bateman and Ms Selena Nelson (Perinatal addiction. All presenters are experts in their fields with considerable practice experience to share with students from both Universities.

Advanced practice nurses are nurses who practice autonomously in clinical practice with a high level of clinical capability as well as having roles in clinical and professional leadership and research. This initiative, addressing two areas of priority in international health, will bring together students from differing health systems and, following evaluation, may provide a blueprint for further collaboration and expansion of the initiative in the future. On the 5th of April students will begin their engagement by introducing each other online and sharing their experiences of the present major global health issue – COVID19.
