UCC Canoe Club in the Alps
17.09.2010

UCC Canoe Club recently returned from a sojourn in the Alps. The group included men and women ranging from fresh-faced first years with mere months of kayaking experience, to those with over a decade of kayaking under their belt.

Thomas Collins, Safety Officer, Canoe Club gives a brief outline of the experience: “It was my first time in the Alps, the scenery and clear alpine water was nothing short of amazing. After an exciting week of paddling and camping in the Sesia Valley in the Italian Alps, we set off for the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Of the places I’ve been to in my life I can safely say that the Julian Alps are the most breathtakingly beautiful.  Briancon in the French Alps was our next stop. Water levels were high in France with hearts pounding as you kayaked down the river! The campsite in L'Argentière was ideally located next to a local slalom course, an ideal whitewater training ground. The site itself was full of university clubs creating a great atmosphere in the evenings around the campfire. The holiday was, without doubt, an experience of a lifetime.”

UCC Canoe Club along with its Captain, Séamus Boyle, welcomes new members all year.  All equipment is supplied free of charge. The annual Alps trip is one of many organised throughout the year.  No kayaking experience is needed. Visit http://www.ucccanoeclub.com for more details.
