Diabetes Management in Primary Care

A conference devoted to the management of Diabetes in the community, took place in UCC on Wednesday last, September 15th 2010.

The event was jointly hosted by the Diabetes Interest Group, HSE South and UCC with over 150 community based health professionals in attendance.

The Diabetes Interest Group is a group of GPs and Practice Nurses, from Cork region, who have come together to optimise the quality of care they provide to their patients with diabetes. The opening address was delivered by Professor Richard Firth, Clinical Lead, HSE National  Diabetes Project.

Conference Speakers included:
Dr Diarmuid Quinlan. Dr Quinlan welcomed the progress in implementing the recommendations  of the HSE Diabetes Expert Advisory Group and looks forward to leading the Diabetes Services Implementation Group for Cork/Kerry. The Cork/Kerry DSIG have set as Podiatry Services and retinopathy Screening as their first two priorities.

Dr Seán Dineen, Consultant Endocrinologist Galway delivered a presentation on Integrated care. Dr Dineen emphasised how primary and secondary care need to look at how we can work together to ensure appropriate diabetes care is available to those who most need it.

Professor Colin Bradley, Department of General Practice UCC presented his recent research giving an overview of the current standard of Diabetes care in primary and secondary care.

Professor Naveed Sattar, Professor of Metabolic Medicine, Glasgow gave an excellent presentation on Managing obesity in Diabetes.

Workshops:
Dr Antoinette Tuthill,
Consultant Endocrinologist, CUH  facilitated an interactive workshop on the therapeutic management of diabetes.

Dr Eddie Murphy, Consultant Clinical Psychologist  facilitated a workshop on ”Influencing  patient Behaviour” as an essential element of  Diabetes Care.

The HSE Podiatrists from CUH and the Community facilitated an excellent workshop on the use of the Foot Screening tool.

The 6 GP Software systems in use each presented a workshop on setting up Diabetes Registers in practice, entering Diabetes consultations and retrieving data for auditing care.
