17.09.2010

UCC's Boole Library was recently presented with two new biomedical books “Inflammatory Bowel Disease” and “Bifidobacteria- Genomics and Molecular Aspects” authored by staff of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, based at UCC.

Accepting the books on behalf of the Boole Library, Richard Bradfield, Assistant Librarian, Science and Technology, said: "These finely produced books are very valuable additions to our collections. It is always particularly gratifying to add the publications of UCC staff to the Library's collections and I am grateful to Professor Shanahan and Professor van Sinderen for their generosity in making this presentation."

“Inflammatory Bowel Disease” provides an up-to-date and comprehensive review of the science behind inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as well as evidence-based clinical guidance on diagnosis, treatment and long-term management of IBD. This is an invaluable information resource for all those in the medical team treating patients with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, whether they are a gastroenterologist, gastrointestinal surgeon or GI nurse specialist.  The book is co-edited by Fergus Shanahan, Director of the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and Department of Medicine, UCC and Consultant Gastroenterologist at Cork University Hospital,  Stephen Targan and Loren Karp.

“Bifidobacteria- Genomics and Molecular Aspects” is a jointly edited by Prof Douwe van Sinderen, Principal Investigator at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre and Department of Microbiology, UCC and Dr Baltazar Mayo, Instituto de Productos Lácteos de Asturias, Villaviciosa, Asturias, Spain.  It brings together the expertise and enthusiasm of the leading bifidobacteria experts from around the world to provide a state-of-the art overview of the molecular biology and genomics of this important genus, which contains many health-promoting or probiotic members.
