In his address, Cllr O’Connell distilled the tangible need for product and process modelling and IT applications in Architecture, Engineering and Construction by detailing plans worth in excess of €2 billion for the re-development of Cork City Docklands by the year 2020. In addition, he encouraged ECPPM 2010 delegates to consider Cork City as one “Living Laboratory City”, an expanded concept of the present Environmental Research Institute on the Lee Road. He congratulated all delegates on their achievements and emphasised specific “victories” such as the International Energy Research Centre, United Technologies Research Centre Ireland and the Science Foundation Ireland funded ITOBO Strategic Research Cluster.
Other keynote speakers present at the conference were Professor Raimar Scherer, TU Dresden, Germany, Mr. Santanu Das, Bentley Systems, USA and Professor Robert Amor, University of Auckland, New Zealand. In what is regarded as a major milestone for the Western Gateway Building, Professor Karsten Menzel, Chair IT in AEC, Civil and Environmental Engineering, UCC congratulated all Western Gateway Building personnel for getting the building ready for the conference and reinforced how much a “privilege and honor it is to host ECPPM2010 and the first conference in the WGB, UCC”.
