Ms Ciara Connolly, a UCC graduate and current member of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems was awarded a prize for her Master’s thesis “The performance of dedicated short bias hedge funds” in Paris recently.

She received the award after participating in the “26e concours de mémories de l’economie et de la finance” an international research competition run by Le Centre des Professions Financières, the leading think-tank and professional organisation for the French financial sector.

Ciara’s thesis was undertaken as part of her MBS (Corporate Finance and Accounting) and was completed under the supervision of Dr Mark Hutchinson (Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems).  Her thesis was applauded by Vincent Bazi, vice president of SFAF (La Société Française des Analystes Financiers) as an extremely original and innovative piece of research into new methods of performance evaluation in the hedge fund industry.

“Le concours de mémories de l’economie et de la finance” is a highly prestigious competition which has been designed to reward original research by students in the area of finance and economics.  Currently in its 26th year the competition is an annual educational initiative designed to foster a close relationship between leading academic institutions and financial professional bodies.  Applications are made annually from leading international business schools with this year’s competition seeing 132 applications from 51 academic institutions including EDHEC Business School, HEC Paris and London Business School.  Nine prizes totalling almost €60,000 in prize money were awarded to students from ULS Solvay Bruxelles, Université Toulouse, Université Bordeaux IV, ESSEC Paris, EM Lyon, Université Paris I, IIM-CNAM Paris, ISFA Lyon and UCC.

Professor Ciarán Murphy, Head of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems, congratulated Ciara on her achievement which he said once again highlights the quality of research carried out by both students and academics in the field of business within UCC.
