The NUI celebrated the academic achievements of its graduates and students at its annual awards ceremony held in the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham on November 23rd 2010. Presenting awards with a total value of €640,000, the Chancellor of the University, Dr Maurice Manning remarked that ‘at a time when many other kinds of investments have proven to be worthless, we are satisfied that this is money well spent and will yield good returns for a long time’.
Graduates and students from UCC received 34 of the 101 NUI Awards in 2010. The total value of awards to UCC in 2010 was in the region of €80,000. Among the awards to be presented to UCC graduates and students were 3 NUI Travelling Studentships in the Humanities and Social Sciences and in the Sciences, the Dr Mary L Thornton Scholarship in Education (€5,000) and the Mansion House Fund Scholarships in Irish and Irish History (€2,000 each). UCC also featured prominently in the Dr H H Stewart Literary and Medical Awards winning 26 medals in this competition.
In 2010, over 100 students and graduates from the constituent universities and recognised colleges of the federal university received awards. UCD, UCC, NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway, RCSI and NCAD were represented in the award winners.
Other awards included the NUI Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Literature and History, the Denis Phelan Scholarship, the NUI Art and Design Award and the NUI Club London Scholarship.
