French Filmmaker to be honoured at UCC Conference
13.09.2010

A major international conference on amateur cinema will take place in UCC on September 17th, 18th and 19th.

The conference stems from an IRCHSS-funded RDI project based in UCC, “Capturing the Nation: Irish Home Movies, 1930-1970”, a collaboration between Drs Barry Monahan, Laura Rascaroli and Gwenda Young (UCC) and Senior Archivists at the Irish Film Institute in Dublin.

“Saving Private Reels” is a conference on the presentation, appropriation and re-contextualisation of the amateur moving image. It is an international event with over 80 delegates, at which more than 50 speakers from 12 countries will present on their research, and 7 filmmakers will introduce screenings of their work.

The conference will host two keynote speakers who have written the seminal studies on this topic:  Professor Roger Odin (Paris III, Sorbonne Nouvelle) and Professor Patricia Zimmerman (Ithaca, New York). It will also honour the work of renowned Paris-based filmmaker, Joseph Morder, who will be attending the conference and participating in a Q+A session after a screening of his films. The selection of papers at the conference reflects the breath of the concept of amateur cinema today, and includes topics such as national and local cultural histories, identity and autobiography, technology and preservation, avant-garde contexts and YouTube. The programme also includes a special event at which some of the Irish amateur footage digitised as part of the project will be screened with live musical accompaniment; the project itself will also be presented at this event, which is scheduled for Friday, September 17th at 6.30pm in the Aula Maxima, and will be followed by a reception at 7.30pm.
