The Glucksman celebrates Cork Senior Community
13.09.2010

The Lewis Glucksman Gallery welcomed members of the senior community in Cork and their carers to a day of music and visual art organised in their honour on Friday last, September 10th 2010.

Following the success of last year’s Senior Community Day at the Glucksman, this year’s event was fully subscribed and included seniors from many different organisations in the city including the Cork Carers Association, Active Retirement Ireland, Cork Seniors Together, Douglas Guild Irish Countrywomen’s Association and Turner’s Cross Active Retired.

Participants experienced an afternoon of art and music in the gallery followed by a seated dinner in the Café Glucksman. The event began with exhibition tours of the current shows Mixtapes: popular music in contemporary art and From The Sources, a work created by Mel Mercier to accompany the centenary of Aloys Fleischmann.

Guests were formally welcomed to the gallery by Director, Fiona Kearney, who said: “It is an honour for us to host representatives from the senior community in Cork and I am delighted to formally welcome our guests today on behalf of UCC President, Michael Murphy. This event marks the beginning of a dedicated programme of activities for seniors that will continue throughout the Autumn and so myself and the gallery team look forward to welcoming our guests back regularly over the coming months”.

The afternoon provided entertainment by the jazz guitarist Ian Date and the Foot Warmers and a special performance by Camilla Griehsel and the Retorika Quartet, an ensemble of some of Cork’s most talented string players.

The Senior Community Day also marks the launch of the Glucksman’s new programme of events and activities for seniors, which includes screenings, discussions, tours and courses.
