UCC students presented with National University of Ireland Awards (NUI)
18.11.2008

UCC students were recently honoured by the NUI at a presentation of awards by Dr Garret FitzGerald, Chancellor, NUI. Dr FitzGerald extended congratulations to scholars, graduates and students who qualified for awards this year.
He said it was a great day of celebration every year but particularly so this year when the NUI is celebrating the centenary of the foundation in 1908.

“In this centennial year of the University, it gives me great pleasure to welcome to this awards ceremony the distinguished scholars, graduates and students from the NUI constituent universities and recognised colleges. This year, we are celebrating one hundred years of scholarship in the National University of Ireland, one hundred years of examinations and assessments, projects, practicals, orals, dissertations, theses, where students have risen to the top and been rewarded for excellence.

Universities are called on to fulfil many roles on society. Particularly nowadays, in a society whose prosperity is based on knowledge, universities are called on to be drivers of economic development, to promote innovation and to provide graduates for the workforce with increasingly high level of technological skill.  At their core, however, universities are concerned with academic achievement, with the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of learning.

These core activities of the universities are at the centre of our celebration today. The graduates and students who are receiving awards have excelled in their own universities. They have also been adjudged by the NUI examiners and extern examiners to be outstanding among their peers across all four NUI constituent universities – University College Cork, University College Dublin; National University of Ireland, Galway and National University of Ireland, Maynooth, and including in the case of medicine and nursing, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.”
