Asian Studies Ireland Association (ASIA) established at UCC
18.11.2008

A new network to strengthen links with Asia was launched at UCC on Thursday last (November 13th 2008).
The Asia Studies Ireland Association (ASIA), the first of its kind in Ireland, was established by representatives from eleven Irish universities and business representatives to promote the study, teaching and research of topics relating to Asia.

The Association has set up an Advisory Board and has elected its first President, Professor Fan Hong, Director of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies (UCC).  Professor Fan Hong explained: “Social and economic development in Asia has a growing impact on European countries. An open economy such as Ireland’s is increasingly dependent on exchange with the economies of countries like China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam. The changes in Asia make it an ever more important partner for Irish universities, business and government. Bringing together all major universities on the island of Ireland, such as UCC, Queen’s University Belfast, University College Dublin (UCD), Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), the University of Limerick (UL), and the Institute of International and European Affairs, ASIA hopes to contribute to the comprehensive and systematic development of Asian Studies in Ireland”.

ASIA was launched during the 2nd Annual International Conference of the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies (UCC). At the conference, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, TD, ambassadors from China, India, Iran, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia, and Dr Michael Murphy, President of UCC, welcomed the development and called for closer co-operation between Ireland and Asia.

The Secretariat of ASIA is located in the Irish Institute of Chinese Studies (UCC), O’Rahilly Building, UCC. Dr Joern-Carsten Gottwald is the General Secretary.

ASIA welcomes the participation of all interested with a background in research, teaching, studying or working with or in Asia!  Enquiries:  Asian Studies Ireland Association (ASIA).  Tel: +353-(0)21-4903260; email: ASIA@ucc.ie
