UCC Sports Stars were honoured this evening (Monday, November 17th 2008) when almost 100 Sports Scholarships were presented to students at the university. This year, 22 sports were recognised which included Cycling, Volleyball and Triathlon for the first time.

Mr Con O’Brien, Vice-President for the Student Experience who presented the scholarships said: “Once again the number of students in UCC excelling in sports applying for a Sports Scholarship is extremely high. Almost 100 students received Sports Scholarships this year.”

Two UCC sporting heroes were remembered again this year. The Jason Foley Memorial Scholarship, now in its second year, is in honour of the memory of Jason Foley who died on the basketball court of sudden cardiac death syndrome while playing for his local club Glenmary BC Midleton. Jason was a Commerce Student at the time of his death. This year’s recipient was Niamh Dwyer for Basketball – UCC and Team Montenotte, Glanmire. Niamh is a Senior Irish International player. The Scholarship was presented by members of Jason’s family and The Jason Foley Fundraising Committee.

Two scholarships were awarded in memory of Jonathan Herlihy who drowned tragically while attempting to save two others from drowning. Second Year Commerce student, William Kearney from Glanmire retained the Jonathan Herlihy Scholarship while Daniel Kearney was honoured for the first time. Daniel is a twin brother of William making this presentation a unique family occasion. The scholarships was presented by members of Jonathan’s family and The Jonathan Herlihy Fundraising Committee.
