UCC Lecturer Wins Prestigious MIT Research Award
19.11.2008

UCC Lecturer, Dr John O’Donoghue, has won the MIT 2008 Ballou/Pazer DQ/IQ Research Award. The Ballou/Pazer DQ/IQ award recognises a PhD dissertation that demonstrates a significant contribution to the field of Information Quality (IQ).
John was presented with the award at the International Conference on Information Quality (ICIQ) (http://mitiq.mit.edu/ICIQ/2008/) at the MIT Faculty Club.

John's work focussed on Data management in Body Area Networks (BAN), which can wirelessly capture an array of patient vital signs in real-time including: electrocardiogram (ECG), pulse and blood pressure among others as well as their ambient context i.e. position in space. They have the potential to generate large volumes of data, which can now be managed by an intelligent Data Management System (DMS) that helps support medical practitioners and their decision making process, and ultimately improving the delivery of patient care.

John completed his PhD in the Department of Computer Science, UCC in October 2007 (Supervisor: Dr John Herbert), thesis title “Context-Sensitive Quality Data Management for Pervasive Computing Environments”. John is now lecturing in Business Information Systems, while continuing his research within a number of medical environments which may benefit from the integration of pervasive monitoring devices and their supporting software architectures.
