“Professor Steinman is almost single-handedly responsible for the new critical attention to the work of Frank O’Connor over the past twenty years.  His books, Frank O’Connor at Work and A Frank O’Connor Reader, enhanced O’Connor’s reputation in America at a time when he was neglected in Ireland”, said Professor Colbert Kearney, Department of English, UCC.  As a result of Professor Steinman’s scholarship the situation has changed and there is a new interest in – and respect for – O’Connor’s work and the short story in general, especially in Cork, home of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award.
 
Professor Steinman has close links with UCC’s English Department and also with the Boole Library where he was centrally involved in the creation of the Frank O’Connor Webpage in 2007.  His lecture will deal with stories in which O’Connor celebrates the surprising ways that love reveals itself.

The annual Frank O’Connor series was inaugurated to great acclaim last year by the American novelist Richard Ford.

Members of the public are invited to attend the lecture and admission is free.
