Picturing our World - The Lewis Glucksman Gallery Schools Programme
11.06.2008

This school year the Glucksman worked with five Cork-based schools on a major visual education project which focused on visual learning and critical thinking.

On Friday, June 13th at 12 noon, Senator Dan Boyle will join the young participants of Picturing our World, their teachers, families and the wider community in the Glucksman to celebrate the achievements of the year.

Artists, film makers, photographers, graphic designers, curators and philosophers worked throughout the school year with the Transition Year pupils from two secondary schools, St Aloysius School and St Angela's College, and the fifth and sixth class pupils from three primary schools, St Patrick's Girls NS, St Maries of the Isle NS and Sundays Well Girls NS. The pupils were introduced to diverse artistic media and the means to exploring and communicating their ideas visually. Participants considered issues concerning globalisation, the changing landscape, the environment, gender, advertising and media, and developed new skills, finding innovative ways to express and translate their ideas.

The Glucksman is taking a leading role in the development of visual education in the region. Through Picturing our World the Lewis Glucksman Gallery contributes to the development of active citizens and creative thinkers, while also responding to the current challenge of creating a more visually literate population in Ireland, with the skills to appreciate and respect the world around them. The in-depth and meaningful nature of the engagement with a focused group of schools ensures a long-term and sustained impact on educators, participants and their families.

Artwork created on the Picturing our World programme will be on display in the Glucksman from Friday 13th to Sunday, June 15th. This will include vibrant scrolls depicting imaginative landscapes created with artist Colin Crotty, short animated films produced with graphic designer Sinead Cliffe and Changing Face, a video work facilitated by the artist and film maker Lisa Fingleton consisting of a series of sixty-two portraits of the young women who participated in Picturing our World.

Picturing our World is generously supported by private donors and Cork City Council as a part of the Creating Waves programme. Members of the public are invited to view the exhibition throughout the week-end.
