Opportunities for Earth Observation in Ireland – UCC Symposium
04.11.2008

Opportunities for Earth Observation in Ireland will be the focus for discussion at the Second Irish Earth Observation Symposium to be held on November 6th-7th next. The Symposium, organised by UCC, will take place at the National Maritime College of Ireland.
Earth Observation through satellite, airborne and ground-based imaging is increasingly being exploited in academic and commercial sectors in Ireland due to a growing awareness of the potential offered by these technologies in seeking solutions to contemporary problems.

Over 60 delegates are expected to attend the Symposium, from across Ireland and the United Kingdom, to present and discuss a range of work being done in this field within Ireland.

This year’s presentations span the full spectrum of Earth Observation, both in terms of applications from land to sea to air, and also in terms of instruments from ship-based to airborne to satellite. “To see such a breadth of topics really does highlight the number of ‘Opportunities for Earth Observation in Ireland’ said Dr Fiona Cawkwell, Department of Geography, UCC. “And in this International Year of Planet Earth, it is notable how many of the presentations also focus on how society can potentially benefit from the knowledge acquired through the research presented here”, she added.

Keynote speaker is Dr Paul Aplin from the University of Nottingham and Chairman of the UK Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society. The UK has a long established history of Earth Observation and it is hoped to develop new links between the research communities on both sides of the Irish Sea.

A number of groups have provided sponsorship for this Symposium, including Ordnance Survey Ireland, the Marine Institute, the Environmental Protection Agency, Space Industry Skillnet, Compass Informatics and the Geological Survey of Ireland.

The first meeting of the Irish Earth Observation community was hosted by Teagasc in 2007 and it is hoped that the meeting will become a regular fixture in the conference calendar.
