Getting Older – Staying Healthy - UCC Public Forum

The health of Ireland’s ageing population and how it might be improved by a better diet, will be the subject of a Public Forum at UCC on Tuesday, November 11th next.

The Forum will explore how the health and life quality of older adults is affected by nutrition and the digestive system.  

Hosted by the ELDERMET project, in conjunction with the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) at UCC, the Forum titled “Health in the older adult – diet, the digestive system, and quality of life”, will address these issues and answer questions from the public.

Speakers will include Professor Cillian Twomey, Consultant Physician in Geriatric Medicine at Cork University Hospital and St. Finbarr’s Hospital and immediate past president of the Irish Gerontological Society, Ms Mary Rea, Senior Research Officer at Moorepark Food Research Centre, Fermoy and the APC with a specific research interest in Clostridium difficile (C.diff) infection and Dr Siobhán Cusack, from the ELDERMET project and the APC. The Forum will be chaired by Dr Paul O’Toole, lead Principal Investigator, the ELDERMET Project and APC, University College Cork.

Presentations will include “The Golden years – maximising quality of life” by Professor Twomey who will celebrate our aging population, outlining the positive outcomes of diagnosing and treating common illnesses of older age and the important role research has played in developing therapies.

Ms Rea’s presentation “Healthy digestion, Healthy life” will describe the function of the microbes in the digestive system, probiotic bacteria and pathogenic bacteria such as Clostridium difficile and antimicrobial alternatives to traditional antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections.

Dr Cusack, ELDERMET Project Co-ordinator, will outline the influence of diet and microbes in healthier lifestyles and provide information on the landmark ELDERMET project at UCC. The Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre is a research centre focusing on gastrointestinal health and the development of therapies for debilitating gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and food poisoning.  The APC is a partnership between University College Cork and Teagasc, Moorepark and is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and industry.  For information on research carried out at the APC, please visit http://apc.ucc.ie
