Science Week 2008 in UCC
03.11.2008

Science Week is a national event that aims to make science, technology and engineering more interesting and accessible to all. Science Week 2008 runs from November 9th-16th with the theme “Science - Shaping Our World”.
UCC has an extensive calendar of events throughout the week to encourage children and adults alike to explore how science may influence the way we shape our planet. The theme will also explore how we can make life more sustainable, how we can positively influence our changing environment and examine areas such as health, transport, telecommunications and technology to make our world a better place to live in.

UCC's events are for primary and secondary students as well as for the general public. For students, The Boole Centre for Research in Informatics (BCRI) is hosting the Boole Informatics Invitational where students can experience the exciting advances that have been made in informatics and to meet the researchers. A Chemistry Instrument Tour will also show some of the instruments chemists used to analyse molecules for purity and to determine their chemical structure. The Department of Biochemistry is again hosting the very popular Detection of the genetic disease sickle cell anemia and DNA isolation workshop to create an awareness of the applications of biological knowledge to modern society. Students are invited to STEPS "Engineering as a Career" Student Seminars in Tyndall to obtain a clearer understanding of the various disciplines of engineering.  For physics enthusiasts "What have optics ever done for us" workshop will illustrate how concepts like refraction, reflection and waves are fundamental building blocks of cutting edge science, internet communication and quantum information. Scientists from the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre will visit primary schools to give an interactive presentation about the immune system called Our Body's Protectors - keeping us fit4life about how your body fights infections to stay healthy and strong.

Other events include Bright Sparks (Anyone for Science) by Christine Campbell, DIY Symmetry workshop, Mysterious Materials, Shape your world with graphics workshop, The good, the bad and the bubbly, Getting to know DNA and the Magic Planet Show.  The ISTA & UCC Science Society are proud to be hosting a SCIENCE QUIZ where over 30 teams will battle it out for the Science Cup. For the general public there will be lectures by Prof. Anton Zeilinger of the University of Vienna titled Quantum Puzzles and their Applications in Future Information Technologies and Dr Siobhan Cusack from the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre titled Health in the older adult- diet, the digestive system and quality of life. The extremely popular Chemistry Magic Show will also take place with a fun filled spectacular series of experiments by Dr Declan Kennedy and his team of technicians.
