National Academy Awards for Excellence in Teaching announced

The National Academy for the Integration of Research & Teaching & Learning (NAIRTL) announced the winners of their Awards for Excellence in Teaching in Higher Education on December 15th 2008.
The Awards Programme was introduced to honour exemplary teachers who are also innovative researchers in higher education in Ireland. Minister of State in the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Mr Billy Kelleher, TD opened the ceremony.

Individual awards were presented to Dr Peter Cantillon, Department of General Practice, NUIG, Professor Sylvia Draper, School of Chemistry, TCD, Mr Seán O’Leary, School of Mechanical and Process Engineering, CIT, and Dr Ray Murphy, Irish Centre for Human Rights, NUIG. A team award was presented to Ms Irene Hartigan, Ms Angela Flynn, Ms Siobhán Murphy and Ms Nuala Walshe, School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC.

The Award comprised a crystal vase and a certificate endorsed by Mr Michael Kelly, Chairman of the Higher Education Authority and €5,000.

Áine Hyland, Emeritus Professor of Education welcomed the guests who hailed from a wide range of Higher Education Institutions and Educational Organisations. She explained that “The objectives of the National Academy include improving and enhancing research-informed teaching and learning in higher education.” Following extensive research on National Awards Programmes in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New-Zealand, the National Academy introduced an Awards Programme to honour exemplary teachers who are also innovative researchers in higher education in Ireland.

Director of NAIRTL, Professor Grace Neville closed the proceedings and invited nominations for the 2009 National Awards Programme. Five awards of €5,000 each will be made in 2009. Nominations were invited from all Higher Education Institutions that are recognised by the HEA for the free fees initiative. The awards will recognise and celebrate teachers in higher education who have demonstrated excellence and commitment in integrating their research with their teaching to enhance the student learning experience.
