Confucius Institutes meet in Beijing
17.12.2008

UCC's Confucius Institute was recently represented at the World Congress of the Confucius Institutes in Beijing by Professor Paul Giller, Senior Vice-President Academic, UCC.
Professor Giller delivered a keynote speech at the Congress titled “The Development of Confucius Institutes and the Globalisation of Education: A New Case Study from Ireland”.

In his speech, Professor Giller said education should help individual people and societies to better cope with the effects of globalisation. He went on: “In the face of so many global challenges to the world’s economy, politics, social integration and ecological systems, education and life long learning are more important than ever. Just as important is the contribution of education to a better mutual understanding and closer cooperation among people from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.  And herein lies the real benefit of the Confucius Institute concept and reality.”

More than 1,000 principals of universities and representatives of 249 Confucius Institutes and 56 Confucius Classrooms from 78 countries and their Chinese partner universities participated at the congress.

UCC Confucius Institute was established in November 2007 in partnership with Shanghai University. It aims to promote mutual understanding between Ireland and China through Chinese language, culture, teaching and learning. It has contributed to the Chinese Studies academic programme at UCC and engaged in outreach activities in Cork and the Munster region.

Professor Fan Hong from UCC and Mr Yang Zengxiang from Shanghai University delivered presentations at the Confucius Directors’ Workshop on the topic “The Current Situation and Future Expectation of UCC’s Confucius Institute”.  Professors Giller and Fan Hong also met representatives of Shanghai University to discuss future development of the Confucius Institute at UCC.
