New BSc in Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship offered by UCC
18.12.2008

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr Brendan Smith TD, has welcomed the introduction by University College Cork (UCC) of a new BSc degree course in Food Marketing and Entrepreneurship (CAO code CK502).
"The course comes at a very opportune time for the food sector and will address the innovation and market development requirements of Ireland's future food entrepreneurs.  The importance of the Irish Agri Food industry at every level of society was brought into sharp focus by the domino impact of recent events", the Minister said. He congratulated UCC on its foresight in developing such an innovative course which he said further enhances its existing record in the area of food science.

"This degree is one of a suite of food related degrees offered at UCC and builds on a long tradition (over 90 years) of education and research in the areas of food and commerce. In a bid to meet the Government's priorities for development, UCC has once again played to their strengths in the design of this degree in food marketing and entrepreneurship benefiting from world class research for which UCC is renowned", said Professor Michael Ward, Head, Department of Food Business & Development, UCC.  This degree was designed in consultation with industry to ensure clear graduate career paths. Anne Rigney, HR and Training Manager of Musgraves comments that "This degree will provide graduates with a solid basis to interpret and deal with business issues and the complexities they will face in industry."

Dr Mary McCarthy, programme academic director, said that the programme is designed to equip graduates with the skills set necessary to be successful in a very dynamic business environment. She is delighted with the response by the food industry to this consumer orientated programme that focuses on innovation and enterprise development, and responds to an increasing demand for safe food and healthy lifestyles. Reacting to the launch of the new programme, Michael Dowling, former Secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and currently non-executive Board Director, Kerry Group Plc, commented that "The new programme should ensure that its graduates are well placed to contribute significantly to the development of the Irish and international food, and related, sectors."

It is envisaged that programme graduates will pursue enterprising careers in national and global fast-moving consumer food markets.  For example, the EU food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing industry in Europe, with an annual turnover of €870 billion in 2006, and this is replicated at a global level. Food's importance to health and well-being worldwide underpins its central role in our daily lives providing wide ranging opportunities for graduates of this new innovative programme.
