“Geology in my Backyard”
07.10.2008

Have you ever found a rock or mineral on the local beach, in your garden, or in your backyard, and wondered what it is, and what it can tell you about the Earth’s history?
You can learn a lot if you know what to look for. An exhibition titled “Geology in my Backyard” is currently running in UCC’s Postgraduate Library and presents interpretations of the geology of parts of the Munster area.

The research was carried out by students from the evening Diploma in Geology course who explored the local areas in which they live or work. Some important and highly original work was done. The students were asked to present their findings in a way that would benefit the public. This work and the resulting exhibition is being held as part of Cork’s response to the International Year of Planet Earth.

Seventeen pieces of work are exhibited, and vary from the warm springs of Mallow, Co. Cork to the tetrapod trackway of Valentia Island, Co.Kerry. In addition, local rock, mineral and fossil specimens are on display.

The exhibition was mounted by Mary Lehane and Michael O’Callaghan from UCC’s Geology Department.  The exhibition runs until October 20th.

The next Diploma in Geology course begins on October 7th 2008.  Contact: Course Coordinator, Dr Bettie Higgs, Department of Geology, UCC, b.higgs@ucc.ie
