UCC Graduate wins the GKN Award for the Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year
03.10.2008

UCC's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has won three awards at the Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year Awards. The award ceremony took place at the Royal Lancaster Hotel on Friday, September 26th 2008.
Success for UCC on the night began with Rory Clune, a recent graduate from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering being chosen from a shortlist of three students to win the "The Bentley Motors Award for the Best Mechanical Engineering Student".  This was based on research work carried out in his final year on "Optimisation of Stainless Steel Coronary Stents", under the supervision of Dr Denis Kelliher, lecturer in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.

Rory, one of 15 category winners, was announced as the winner of the penultimate award of the night, "The GKN Award for the Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year". The Science, Engineering & Technology Student of the Year Awards are established as Britain's most important awards for science and engineering undergraduates and are also open to students studying at universities in the Republic of Ireland.  The Awards are multidisciplinary, to reflect the wide range of degrees that British and Irish universities offer.  Out of thousands of entrants, Rory was the only Irish student out of the 45 top students shortlisted.  This outstanding UCC graduate is currently pursuing a PhD at MIT.

The final award of the night, the "The RPS Award for the Lecturer of the Year", was presented to Dr Kelliher, for his role as research supervisor of the "Student of the Year".

The work from the project was published at the "7th ASMO UK / ISSMO conference on Engineering Design Optimization" conference held in Bath, UK on July 7th & 8th 2008.  Rory presented the work at the conference and Dr Kelliher is currently preparing a journal paper following an invitation from the conference organisers.

On the night, Rory was accompanied by his mother Deidre Clune, TD.  Also in attendance were Professor Karsten Menzel, Head of Department and Professor Philip O'Kane, both from the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, UCC.
