Can bad bugs be beneficial?
23.12.2008

Using bad bugs to do good things is the subject of a new book called "Patho-biotechnology" by Dr Roy Sleator and Professor Colin Hill, Principal Investigators at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC), UCC.

The term "Patho-biotechnology" was coined by Sleator and Hill to describe the exploitation of pathogens, disease-causing organisms, or pathogen derived factors, for beneficial applications in biotechnology, food and medicine.

"This book, which includes chapters from leading scientists worldwide, outlines the many ways in which disease causing microbes can be harnessed for beneficial effect, encapsulating the patho-biotechnology concept" said Sleator.

The authors recently presented a copy of the book to John Fitzgerald, Head Librarian at UCC's Boole Library. "This finely produced book is a very valuable addition to our collections and is certain to form core reading by generations of students and scholars to come." It is always particularly gratifying to add the publications of UCC staff to the Library's collections and I am grateful to Dr Sleator and Professor Hill for their generosity in making this presentation."

The book, "Patho-biotechnology" (ISBN: 978-1-58706-304-6), published by Landes Bioscience as part of its Intelligent Unit Series is available through http://www.landesbioscience.com/
