In line with the Connected Curriculum Framework outlined in the UCC Academic Strategy 2018-2022, the School of Medicine has introduced the INSPIRE lecture series during the current academic year. This series of lectures is delivered to first year medical students across both semesters of the 2019/2020 academic year. This initiative is designed to improve medical students’ research capacity and foster an understanding of how an evidence base is acquired, and how it is applied in clinical practice. INSPIRE will involve a series of scientific talks from research-active academic and clinical staff at UCC School of Medicine who are at the forefront of advances in basic and clinical research.

The first of the INSPIRE lectures was delivered on October 2nd by Dr. Sharon McKenna (pictured), Principal Investigator at the Cork Cancer Research Centre. The title of her talk was “Autophagy in cancer: can we translate it?”. The INSPIRE series was developed by Dr Colm O’Tuathaigh (Medical Education Unit), Dr Collette Hand (Department of Pathology), and Dr John MacSharry (School of Medicine/Microbiology).
