Masculinities in Movement -
the Case of Post-Colonial Algeria

Dr. Melyssa Haffaf will examine representations and discourse on masculinity in post-colonial Algeria. By considering the intersections between nation formation and gender, she interrogates how the French colonial experience and revolution for independence impacted youth aspirations and particularly those of young men. Through the exploration of mediums such as film and literature, Dr. Haffaf shines light on resistance and subversive possibilities while unveiling the chiasm existing between expressions of masculinity and hegemonic discourse.
