17:00 -18:00 CACSSS Seminar Room, O’Rahilly Building
Abstract: This lecture aims to give a different perspective on processes of cultural recognition of marginal religions in Croatia approached via a comparative, multi-level perspective that evokes and reinforces the meanings of historical archives.
The case study, a small Islamic community in Croatia, will be presented through the analysis of its historical archive. By representing and analyzing different archival documents, the lecture will describe and re-examine formal and informal relationships toward religious minority groups in former Yugoslavia and in Croatia. Moreover, it shows that development of complex and non-transparent communication patterns between institutions and individuals or groups creates widespread perception of permanent segregation in religious cultural practice. Finally, the lecture will emphasize that affect, hidden in archival historical documents, is a neglected analytical concept that allows new insights and deeper understanding of religious belonging.
