100 Years of Suffrage Anniversary

100 years ago, in December 1918, Irish women, over 30 and with property, received the vote.

To commemorate this, on Friday next, 7 December, a celebratory parade will take place around the Main Quad, UCC, which will be led by Mrs Sabina Higgins, wife of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, and organised by Dr Finola Doyle O'Neill, School of History, UCC.

I invite all colleagues to participate in, or spectate, this parade at 12.30pm.

Following the commemorative march, there will be a series of short orations from well-known suffragettes including Emily Pankhurst (Dr Finola Doyle O'Neill), Hanna Sheehy Skeffington (Brid Drake), Countess Markievicz (Dr Jean Van Sinderen Law) and Mary MacSwiney (Ber Madden), in the Aula Maxima, North Wing.

This short dramatized event will be followed by a panel of speakers including:

  • Mrs Sabina Higgins
  • Prof. Helen Whelton, Head of School of Medicine
  • Ms Deirdre Clune MEP
  • Ms Fiona O'Loughlin TD
  • Prof. Irene Lynch Fannon, School of Law

Those wishing to participate in the parade are asked to gather along the Stone Corridor at 12.10pm.

For those who wish to spectate, the event will begin on the Main Quad at 12.30pm. All spectators are also invited to enjoy the orations and panel discussion in the Aula Maxima.

Any queries should be directed to Dr Finola Doyle O’Neill at f.doyle-oneill@ucc.ie.

Free. Organised by Dr Finola Doyle O'Neill, School of History
